Custom Connectors Have Been Providing Client Solutions for Over a Decade
Not that we are surprised, but Microsoft is getting ready to envelop a large portion of the App industry into their already expansive folds. IT Toolbox’s article “App Stores abound–Coming to an Enterprise near you?!?” discusses plans to implement a marketplace expansion within the entirety of the Xbox environment that extends to the Windows 8 desktop.
The Microsoft solution will provide a one stop shop and put more control around the content and installation of applications along with a secure environment, especially to Xbox users. However, with the increasing usage of tablets, mobile devices and laptops utilizing applications, a marketplace for server implementation could also be beneficial, especially to IT:
Flexera may be pushing a new solution that will allow corporate IT to develop and deploy their own self service marketplaces to the users of an organization – but also simplify the IT operations side by giving a single point of connection to locate all of those enterprise applications and installation media. Extending these solutions into Linux and Unix platforms will greatly raise the profile of app store benefits to the enterprise. Patching and maintenance can be pushed or performed on demand.
Flexera has a good idea, just not an original one. Polyspot has been utilizing an insight enabling infrastructure and custom connectors to interface their client solutions with an abundance of applications for over a decade.
